Stanford Law School occupies the upper echelon of US law
schools, typically ranking in the top three along with Harvard
and Yale in many law school ranking tables.   The Californian
school was founded in 1893, and currently accommodates
over 500 students chasing their legal qualification.
Its exclusivity is illustrated by the fact that it has one of the
smallest student to faculty ratios in the country, and some of
the smallest class sizes.   Admittance to the school is difficult,
along with LSAT scores, the school looks at work experience
and any graduate study that the student has done prior to
applying.   Only 8.7% of the applicants who applied in 2006
actually received a place.
Add to all this the fact that the school is situated in arguably
one of the most beautiful parts of the world, an area that
enjoys 300 days of sunshine per year, and you have a school
that is generally regarded as being the most attractive in the
country.
The location has its drawbacks, with students reporting that
one of the major factors that causes stress and strain during
their study being the high cost of living in the area, along with
the higher than usual fees that the school charges.   But it is
generally viewed as an investment in your career.   When you
graduate from Stanford, your financial success is pretty much
guaranteed.
Sometimes referred to as the ‘The Harvard of the West’,
Stanford has a reputation for high quality academic rigour, and
the students work very hard indeed.   While the students are
arguably the hardest working in the country, they also party
hard, and nearby Palo Alto provides plenty of opportunities to
socialise.   The Napa valley vineyards nearby offer tastings for
luxury wine, and it is generally believed that Stanford has the
social and academic mix just right.
Interestingly, Stanford offers electives to first year students,
which certainly isn’t the norm.   In the second and third
years, many of the school’s students follow the courses the
school is famous for, courses such as Corporate Law,
Intellectual Property Law, and Environmental Law.   The
school excels in these areas, with those who have pursued
Corporate and Business Law for example, becoming some of
the country’s finest entrepreneurs.
